Singapore and San Jose, CA -- April 14, 1997 -- In an expansion of its worldwide marketing presence, Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing has announced the official opening of its Japan office in Yokohama.

Chartered has also announced the appointment of Mr. Tadao Murayama, vice president of Japan sales. Mr. Murayama will oversee the Chartered office and be responsible for all sales and customer support activities in Japan. He reports to Ray Hawkins, senior vice president, worldwide marketing and sales, who is based at the company's US facility.

Mr. Murayama is a 30-year veteran of the semiconductor industry. Prior to joining Chartered, he was general manager for Texas Instruments KK -- a position he held for nine of his 23 years with that company. Before joining Texas Instruments, Mr. Murayama was employed by Kyodo Electronics Laboratory KK. He holds a BS degree in physics from Tokyo Denki University.

Commenting on today's announcement, Ray Hawkins said, "Japan is a world leader in the manufacture and consumption of integrated circuits, so local presence is a requirement for global companies such as ours. The new Chartered office is dedicated to serving Japan as a critical market center and providing the quality support and customer service that are part of Chartered's culture."
