Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Named Top Fab by Semiconductor
International Magazine
Singapore and San Jose, CA -- May 5, 1997 -- Chartered Semiconductor
Manufacturing has been named one of two top fabs of the year by
Semiconductor International Magazine. The Company is the first pure-play
foundry to earn the prestigious title. Chartered's Fab 2 facility, based in
Singapore, shares top honors with the captive foundry, Digital Semiconductor
Fab-6 of Hudson, Massachusetts.
Semiconductor International's search for the best fabs is an annual
competition open to semiconductor companies and foundries the world over.
Entry forms consisting of detailed questionnaires are sent to approximately
450 fabrication facilities. Of that number, the magazine's judges select
finalists demonstrating state-of-the art environment of the physical facility,
advanced process technology, and leading-edge product portfolios.
Chartered's Fab 2, which was completed in 1996, is a Class-1 SMIF facility
with fully automated robotic controls that allow wafers to remain in a Class-1
environment throughout the entire manufacturing cycle, from start to finish.
Semiconductor International will present the formal award to
Chartered and Digital Semiconductor at a ceremony during the SEMICON West
show, to be held in San Francisco in July. "The "top fabs" award program
recognizes outstanding manufacturing operations based on plant construction
and device fabrication. Evaluating new facilities based on these criteria
gives our readers an understanding of the capabilities they should expect from
their IC vendors," said Donald E. Swanson, editorial director of
Semiconductor International.
Ray Hawkins, Chartered senior vice president, worldwide sales and
marketing, said, "This award is an honor to the entire Chartered team. Their
dedication in planning and execution in the construction of Fab 2 is the
foundation for its success. The award is also a commitment to our customers
that they are entrusting their products to one of the best facilities the
industry can offer."
