Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Wins Design Award
Chartered's Fab 2 clinches the Best Buildable Design Merit Award
conferred by Singapore's Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB)
Singapore -- May 27, 1997 -- The design teams for Chartered
Semiconductor Manufacturing's Fab 2 have received plaques and certificates of
merit for being winners in the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB)
1996 Best Buildable Design Awards for Industrial Buildings, held at the Pan
Pacific Hotel today.
The design accolades go to the joint team of ST Architects & Engineers
Pte Ltd (architectural and structural design), A M Architetti of Italy
(architechtural and design concept), Meissner + Wurst (mechanical, electrical
and cleanroom design) and Singapore Technologies Construction Pte Ltd (the
main contractor). Chartered's Fab 2, located in the Woodlands Industrial Park,
houses a two-storey Class-10 clean room with a mini-environment facility for
manufacturing of wafers for various integrated circuit applications. The main
manufacturing plant comprises of five buildings with a gross area of
approximately 59,000 square metres.
Chartered's Fab 2 project satisfied CIDB's 3 principles of buildable
design: * Standardisation through repetition in dimensions and grids,
component sizes and installation details. * Simplicity with uncomplicated
building systems and installation details. * Single integrated elements by
combining related components into a single element which may be prefabricated.
Mr. Ang Tang Yong, Vice President for Chartered Semiconductor
Manufacturing, said, "Expeditious completion of the project was imperative
because of the large capital outlay and short market life span of the
products. Buildable design became the obvious choice. The use of 40 % of
pre-fabricated components, standardisation and simplicity in detailing
contributed to quality and productivity of the project, allowing it to be
completed on time."
Earlier this month, Fab 2 was also named one of two "Top Fabs of 1997" by
Semiconductor International Magazine. A feature story on the fab
appears in the publication's May issue, and Chartered will receive an award at
the Semicon West show in San Francisco in July.
