Chartered Silicon Partners
breaks ground for new facility
SINGAPORE -- July 15, 1997 -- Chartered Silicon Partners Pte Ltd., a
joint-venture company of Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing (Chartered),
Hewlett-Packard Company (HP) and Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB),
held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new fabrication facility.
The ceremony took place in Woodlands Industrial Park, adjacent to existing
Chartered facilities. Mr. Philip Yeo, chairman of the Singapore Economic
Development Board, was the guest of honour at the ceremony, which also
featured Mr. Tan Bock Seng, president and chief executive officer of Chartered
Semiconductor Manufacturing and Mr. Alan Marty, general manager of HP's
Integrated Circuit Business Division.
The new facility will have a 65,000-square-foot clean room with Class-1
SMIF (Standard Mechanical Interface) mini-environment and a production
capacity of more than 30,000 8-inch wafers per month. The expected process
technology is 0.35 micron and below.
"We are pleased with the progress of the construction plan and expect
production to begin in early 1999," said Mr. Rick Hodgman, general manager of
Chartered Silicon Partners.
The building of the new fab further cements the relationship between
Chartered and HP," said Mr Tan. "We are taking the first step toward realising
Chartered Silicon Partners' goal of being the preferred supplier of
industry-leading foundry services."
"This advanced semiconductor wafer fab project took just three months from
the signing of the joint-venture agreement to the groundbreaking today," said
Mr Marty. "This progress reflects the successful working relationship the
three partners have built. I look forward to celebrating additional milestones
as Chartered Silicon Partners becomes a world-class foundry supplier."
"This speedy development is a result of the strong commitment from the
shareholding companies to implement the project quickly, as well as the
excellent business environment and strong support from the government in
Singapore." said Mr Yeo.
