Synopsys Partners with Chartered
Semiconductor to Develop Accurate Timing and Extraction Models
Direct Silicon Access Labs
Calibrates Technology Files to Chartered 0.25-Micron Silicon
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., -- February 3, 1999 --
Synopsys, Inc. (Nasdaq:SNPS) and Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing, today
announced an agreement to jointly develop silicon-calibrated technology files
for Chartered’s 0.25-micron process customers using Synopsys transistor-level
timing and layout extraction tools. Synopsys’ process-optimized tools allow
Chartered customers to gain full-chip verification prior to committing to
final design tape-out.
Using simulation-tool-calibrated methodologies
developed by Synopsys Direct Silicon Access™ Labs (DSA), Synopsys and
Chartered are developing and exchanging design data and materials for the
creation of a 0.25-micron test chip to validate the tools, models, and test
files in actual silicon. Synopsys DSA Labs develops the GDSII test structure
layout and Chartered fabricates the test chip and provides finished wafers to
Synopsys. DSA Labs then extracts information from the test chip and creates
calibrated process-optimized technology files and SPICE models for Synopsys
transistor-level timing and layout extraction tools ensuring the highest
accuracy for IC designers.
"Our goal is to help customers access
process-optimized timing, extraction and simulation tools to enhance the first
time silicon success of their deep submicron designs," said Ana Hunter, vice
president of EDA at Chartered. "This collaboration between Synopsys and
Chartered supports that goal by ensuring that these state-of-the art tools are
silicon verified and tuned to our 0.25-micron processes."
"Designers require
fast and accurate analysis as geometries shrink and complexity increases.
Using DSA methodology, we correlate our technology files with Chartered’s
manufacturing process, within five percent silicon," said Larry Yamada, vice
president of marketing for the EPIC Technology Group of Synopsys. "This helps
our mutual customers reduce the ‘performance gap’ by realizing speeds more in
line with silicon potential. The proven capabilities of our silicon
characterization services have positioned Synopsys and leading silicon
foundries such as Chartered to provide the highest degree of accuracy for our
mutual customers."
