Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Adopts New
Logo
New look carries company vision of foundry
business for the next millennium
SINGAPORE AND MILPITAS, Calif. -- September 7, 1999 -- Chartered
Semiconductor Manufacturing has introduced a new logo that symbolizes the
company's position as a leading global supplier of semiconductor wafers
entering the next millennium. Announced today, the new logo will begin use
immediately around the world.
"A logo is more than a symbol of our company name," said Barry
Waite, president and CEO. "It is the visual focal point representing our
corporate culture and values of trust, service, partnership and technology.
When customers, the community and our other constituencies see our logo, we
want them to identify the Chartered graphic as the foundry brand of
choice.
"The introduction of this logo comes at a significant turning
point within the semiconductor industry and our own future. As the trend
towards outsourcing continues, foundries must distinguish themselves on their
service, as well as their ability to manufacture. By delivering the best
service possible, we retain our customers' trust and confidence in our
capabilities. These are Chartered's values. These are also the principles on
which Singapore has distinguished itself in its culture and work ethic.

Feng Shui Motif
- Chartered's logo was developed to reflect its demographic profile as a
multi-cultural organization with roots firmly planted in Eastern and Western
philosophies and business perspectives. To communicate the heritage and
values of both cultures, the new logo was designed in accordance with feng
shui guidelines. The new logo is derived from the metal lines (or, "via's")
on a layer of silicon as seen through a scanning electron microscope. Shaped
like a silicon wafer the symbol caries the essence of our core
technology.Fonts in the logotype were chosen to convey the feeling of a
contemporary, strong, established company.
In keeping with feng shui principles, the placement and
weighting of the type and symbol is harmonious. The boldness of the Chartered
name is designed to convey stability, trust, and reliability. The progression
to the second, finer line of type is designed to suggest change, dynamism, and
forward motion, all with unity and balance. The three lines within the round
wafer symbol are placed to suggest the company's three-fold trust between
Chartered and its customers and partners. The logo as a whole was formed to
resemble a lion moving forward, with the symbol as the head, and the type on
the right as a body. The lion itself represents the Singapore culture of
strength and protection. Copies of the logo are available from the editorial
contacts listed on this release.
