Chartered Names Japan Semiconductor Industry
Veteran to
Board of Directors
- SINGAPORE -- January 18, 2000 -- Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing
(Nasdaq:CHRT, SGX:CHARTERED) has announced the appointment of Dr. Tsugio
Makimoto to its board of directors. Dr. Makimoto serves as corporate chief
technologist for Hitachi in Tokyo, Japan.
An industry veteran with over 40 years' diverse manufacturing and
management experience at Hitachi, Dr. Makimoto is a recipient of the
prestigious Ichimura Award for developing complex integrated circuits (called
MOS LSI devices) for use in calculators. He was appointed IEEE Fellow in 1997
for his contribution to high density MOS devices and has co-authored two
books, LIVING WITH THE CHIP, in 1995, and DIGITAL NOMAD, published in 1997. He
is a visiting professor of Toyo University and a member of the advisory
committee of Japan's Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST) and
serves on the international advisory panel of the National Science and
Technology Board (NSTB) of Singapore.
"Makimoto-san's distinguished career as engineer, pioneer and author
demonstrate the vision, knowledge and creativity that will serve Chartered

qualities will contribute new insights in serving the important Japan market

Commenting on his new role, Dr Makimoto said, "I am pleased to work with

Japan and around the world."
Dr Makimoto earned a master's of science degree at Stanford University,
California. He earned his doctorate degree from the University of Tokyo in
1971 with a dissertation thesis on high-frequency transistors.
