Children's Aid Society in Singapore Receives Support from Chartered

SINGAPORE, September 27, 2000 - As part of its corporate citizenship program, Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing (NASDAQ:CHRT, SGX-ST:CHARTERED) today announced it is donating a van to the Children's Aid Society of Singapore. Valued at more than S$71,000, the van is intended to ease the transportation needs of the Society and enhance the children's quality of life.

The van will allow the Society to create a more flexible and expansive schedule to meet the varied needs of the children. It will enable the children greater access to a variety of activities, specifically transportation to school and hospital in the event of an emergency.

T S Zain, chairman of the Children's Aid Society said, "We are grateful for this donation from Chartered in support of the children and it is encouraging to see private corporations assisting in such a tangible way."

The donation to the Children's Aid Society is reflective of Chartered's commitment to the community. Chartered's community involvement began in May 1989 with its contribution to the Community Chest's SHARE program. The Company has also supported other charitable causes and community development activities such as the Red Cross Blood Donation Drive and the National Education Program.

"We see this donation as an opportunity to enrich the quality of life of the children and it is our way of showing care and support for the community in which we operate." said Chartered's vice president, Human Resources, Tan Seng Chai.
