INDUSTRY VETERAN JIM NORLING JOINS
CHARTERED'S BOARD OF DIRECTORS
SINGAPORE, March 12, 2001 - Chartered Semiconductor
Manufacturing (Nasdaq: CHRT and SGX-ST: Chartered),
one of the world's top three silicon foundries, today
announced the appointment of electronics industry veteran
and long-time Motorola executive Jim Norling to its
board of directors. Norling will serve as deputy chairman
of the board, and will bring to Chartered's board of
directors an intimate understanding of the entire electronics
industry and a wealth of industry relationships.
An executive vice president at Motorola, Norling retired
in July 2000 after a distinguished 35-year career with
the electronics giant. Norling held numerous leadership
positions at Motorola, most recently he served as president
of the Personal Communications Sector, the then-largest
business in the company. Norling also held positions
of deputy to the CEO, president of the Semiconductor
Product Sector, and president of Motorola Europe, Middle
East and Africa. He began his career as an electronics
engineer in the Semiconductor Research Department.
"Chartered is well-positioned to capitalize on the continuing
acceleration of the outsourcing trend. Its focus on
the high-growth communications sector and deep, collaborative
relationships with its customers makes sense and should
further enhance its long-term growth potential," Norling
said. "I am honored to be on Chartered's board of directors
and look forward to offering my industry expertise as
Chartered moves to realize its exciting opportunities."
"I am happy that Jim is able to join our board," said
Ho Ching, chairman of Chartered's board of directors.
"As Chartered grows and develops, we need to constantly
reposition ourselves ahead of the curve. Jim's experience
and expertise will add another dimension to our deliberations
and help Chartered take the long view."
In addition to his work experience, Norling served as
chairman and board member of the Semiconductor Industry
Association during his tenure as president of Motorola's
Semiconductor Product Sector. Norling is also a past
chairman of the Phoenix United Way and currently serves
on the board of directors for Harley-Davidson, Inc.
