CHARTERED OPENS OFFICE IN NORDIC REGION

Leading foundry strengthens customer support to Europe

STOCKHOLM, Sweden - November 7, 2001 - Chartered Semiconductor Europe, a subsidiary of Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing (Nasdaq: CHRT and SGX-ST: Chartered), today announced the opening of an office in Stockholm, Sweden, to cover the Nordic market area. Chartered, one of the world's top three silicon foundries, becomes the first dedicated foundry to establish a physical presence in the Nordic region. The Stockholm location ensures Chartered is strategically positioned within one of the major technology hubs in Europe.

Chartered will use its local presence to better serve current and future customers and technology partners in the Nordic countries through closer working relationships and local resources that can be rapidly mobilized to support customers' requirement for advanced manufacturing solutions and services.

Chartered has named semiconductor industry veteran Stefan Ahlquist as director, Northern Europe to head the UK, Benelux and Nordic area. Ahlquist has more than 17 years of experience in the European semiconductor industry. Prior to joining Chartered, Ahlquist worked as European sales director within Motorola's Semiconductor Product Sector based in Toulouse, France. "As part of Chartered's forward-looking strategy, we are making a long-term investment in Europe, given its high concentration of IDMs and systems companies serving the global communications market," said Allan Hughes, president of Chartered Europe. "Chartered's presence in the Nordic countries will enable us to provide dedicated support to our customers here and better forge deeper, stronger collaborative relationships with some of the world's leading technology drivers."

Chartered differentiates itself through its flexible, customer-centered approach that delivers advanced solutions to companies dealing with the stringent silicon density, performance and reliability requirements of diverse applications such as communications, PC and consumer products.

Chartered's office for the Nordic region is located at Länsmanstigen 1, 182 36 Danderyd, Sweden (Phone: + 46 8 622 500; Fax: + 46 8 622 6002).
