STRENGTHENING TECHNOLOGY FOCUS
Accomplished technologist joins Office of the President,
broadening Company's executive decision-making capability
SINGAPORE
- December 12, 2001 - Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing
(NASDAQ: CHRT and SGX-ST: Chartered), one of the world's
top three silicon foundries, today announced the appointment
of Dr. Shi-Chung "SC" Sun as senior vice president of
technology development. With the creation of this new
position, Chartered will expand its Office of the President,
previously a four-person executive management team that
acts as the company's collaborative decision-making
authority, to include Dr. Sun, further strengthening
the company's commitment to development of leading-edge
technology.
In his role, Dr. Sun will oversee Chartered's entire
technology development organization. He will be leading
the team that drives the company's execution of its
technology roadmap and long-term technology strategies.
He will direct Chartered's efforts toward technology
leadership in the foundry industry.
"The appointment of an accomplished technologist like
Dr. Sun demonstrates the strength of Chartered's commitment
to the acceleration of our technology development, furthering
our position as a top-tier foundry," said Barry Waite,
president and CEO of Chartered. "Along with his considerable
technology experience, Dr. Sun has a proven track record
of success in both Asia Pacific and the United States.
He'll be a significant asset to the Office of the President,
adding an additional dimension to the company's decision-making
capability. His appointment reflects Chartered's ability
to attract top talent and expand our technology development
team to respond aggressively to customer needs."
Dr. Sun draws on a strong background in semiconductor
technology with nearly 30 years of experience. Dr. Sun
joins Chartered from Promos Technologies in Taiwan,
where he served as the head of research and development.
Prior to that, he spent four years at TSMC in key R&D
positions. Dr. Sun also taught for several years as
a professor with the National Nano Device Lab at Taiwan's
National Chiao Tung University. In addition, during
his career he held various positions with AMD, Catalyst
Semiconductor, Hewlett-Packard and AT&T Bell Labs. Dr.
Sun, who received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering
from Stanford University, has been awarded eight US
patents with eight more pending, and his work has been
featured in more than 100 technical publications.
Dr. Sun now becomes the fifth member of Chartered's
Office of the President. Created in August 2000 as a
foundation for future growth, Chartered's Office of
the President expands the decision-making bandwidth
by which the company operates, resulting in an increased
responsiveness to customers on a global basis. In addition
to Waite and Dr. Sun, the Office of the President consists
of Rob Baxter, senior vice president of business operations;
John Docherty, senior vice president of manufacturing
and technology operations; and Chia Song Hwee, senior
vice president, chief financial officer, and chief administrative
officer. With the addition of Dr. Sun, this group draws
on more than 125 years of combined experience in the
semiconductor industry, with strong backgrounds and
track records of success in business operations, finance,
manufacturing, and technology.
